Who can apply for a Chevening Scholarship?

Chevening provides exceptional future leaders globally with opportunities to pursue one-year master’s programs in the United Kingdom. While there is no set mold for a Chevening Scholar, they typically possess a strong drive, leadership qualities, and a fervent desire to drive positive transformations in their respective countries.

We welcome applications from all eligible candidates, regardless of their background. We’re not concerned with factors such as gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, family status, or socioeconomic background. We’re solely interested in your ability to create a compelling application that shows your potential for success in our rigorous Master’s program in the UK, along with a well-defined career path.

Chevening Scholarship Eligibility

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must:

1) Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.

2) Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has ended.

3) To be eligible for a postgraduate program at a UK university, you must have earned an undergraduate degree that meets their entry requirements. In most cases, this is comparable to achieving a 2:1 Upper Second-Class Honours degree in the UK. However, requirements may vary based on your chosen course of study and the university you apply to.

4) Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience.

5) To qualify for the opportunity, you must submit applications to three different eligible UK university courses and secure an unconditional offer from at least one of them before the specified deadline outlined in the application schedule.

You are not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship if you:

You cannot apply if you are:

1) Currently or previously employed by the British government, including its associated organizations, within the past two years from the time Chevening applications open.

2) A relative of someone employed by the British government within the past two years from the time Chevening applications open.

3) Only those who are currently employed, previously employed, or related to someone employed by Chevening Partner organizations can apply for these awards. However, if you have been employed within the past two years, you cannot receive an award from the same organization you work for, previously worked for, or have a family connection to.

4) Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship.

Having a master’s degree does not prevent you from applying for a Chevening Award to study for a second master’s degree in the UK, as long as you can clearly explain why it will help you fulfil your career plan to influence positive change in your home country.

Once submitted, applications undergo an electronic sift against our eligibility criteria. Any applications deemed ineligible will be removed from the selection process. Please see the list of common errors here. If you make these errors in your application form, your application will be ineligible. Please note that once your application has been submitted, it is not possible to change it retrospectively.
