Selma Blair was born the youngest of four daughters to Molly Ann Cooke and Elliot I. Beitner in the Detroit neighborhood of Southfield, Michigan. Her maternal grandfather founded Penn Fruit, and she spent the majority of her youth in Philadelphia.
