In 1956, he began performing with his high school classmate Art Garfunkel. Simon and Garfunkel rose to popularity in the 1960s. Their folk-rock fusion in singles like “The Sound of Silence”, “Mrs. Robinson”, “America” and “The Boxer” served as a soundtrack to the counterculture movement. Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970), their final album before disbanding, is one of the best-selling albums of all time. Simon has experimented with gospel, reggae, and soul throughout his solo career. His acclaimed 1970s work, which included Paul Simon (1972), There Goes Rhymin’ Simon (1973), and Still Crazy After All These Years (1975), sustained him in the public eye and earned accolades, providing the songs “Mother and Child Reunion” and “Mother and Child Reunion.”

Simon was born to Hungarian-Jewish parents on October 13, 1941, in Newark, New Jersey. His father, Louis (1916-1995), was a City College of New York college professor of education, double-bass player, and dance bandleader who played under the name Lee Sims. Belle (1910-2007), his mother, was an elementary school teacher. His family relocated to the Kew Gardens Hills neighborhood of Flushing, Queens, New York City, in 1945.

Simon’s childhood was described by musician Donald Fagen as one of “a certain kind of New York Jew, almost a stereotype really, to whom music and baseball are very important.” I believe it has anything to do with the parents. The parents are either immigrants or first-generation Americans who felt like outsiders, and they attracted to black music and baseball in search of an alternative society. Simon remarked that “isn’t far from the truth” after hearing Fagen’s depiction. Simon used to play baseball and stickball as a kid. He recalled his father as amusing and intelligent, although he worked late and did not spend much time with his children.

Simon penned, recorded, and released over 30 songs between 1957 and 1964. He occasionally collaborated with Garfunkel as Tom & Jerry on tracks such as “Our Song” and “That’s My Story.” The majority of the songs Simon recorded at the time were performed by himself or with musicians other than Garfunkel. Amy, Big, Hunt, King, Tribute, and Madison were among the minor record labels that released them. For these recordings, he employed multiple aliases, most notably “Jerry Landis,” but also “Paul Kane” and “True Taylor.” By 1962, he was a frequent writer/producer for various Amy Records acts, including Dotty Daniels, The Vels, and Ritchie Cordell, operating as Jerry Landis.
