Antony John Blinken is an American government official and diplomat who has served as the 71st Secretary of State of the United States since January 26, 2021. He previously served as President Barack Obama’s deputy national security advisor from 2013 to 2015 and deputy secretary of state from 2015 to 2017. In this capacity, he assisted in the formulation of US strategy toward Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran’s nuclear program. On January 20, 2013, Blinken was sworn in as the deputy national security advisor, succeeding Denis McDonough.
Over the last two decades, Blinken has held prominent foreign policy responsibilities in two governments. From 1994 to 2001, he was a member of the National Security Council (NSC) staff. Blinken served as special assistant to the president and senior director for strategic planning, as well as NSC senior director for speechwriting, from 1994 until 1998. From 1999 to 2001, he served as the president’s special assistant and senior director for European and Canadian relations.
